Director of Bioinformatics
Division of Genomic Diagnostics
Dr. Mahdi Sarmady is the Director of Bioinformatics in the Division of Genomic Diagnostics and an Assistant Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He oversees a team which is responsible for developing and integrating clinical-grade software, pipelines and analytical algorithms. These enterprise-scale solutions support data management, lab workflow automation, clinical correlation, variant interpretation, and reporting of division’s clinical tests including exome test, various disease panels, and tumor molecular profiling assays. His primary clinical interests include computational diagnostics and applications of deep learning on medical and genomic data in precision medicine. Mahdi and his team works in close collaboration with the D³b team to enable the development and launch of cutting-edge genomic diagnostics tests and applications.
Since joining CHOP in November of 2010, Mahdi’s research has focused on computational diagnostics and applications of deep learning on medical and genomic data.
Mahdi earned both a BSc and MSc degree in Software Engineering from the University of Tehran in Tehran, Iran before completing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
